Congressman Mike Conaway (R-Midland) announced last week Midland College received a grant from the Department of Education in the amount of $2.8 million for the Hispanic Serving Institutions Program.

This grant is the third Midland College has received from the Hispanic Serving Institutions program with the Department of Education. Funding

for this "Puente ACCESSO" project will begin Oct. 1.

There are two major initiatives in this grant:

- Strengthening Developmental Education. A measurable number of students need to enter developmental courses at Midland College. These students experience significant academic barriers as they attempt to improve their lives via higher education. This grant will address those academic barriers and increase student success.

This initiative will develop a revised assessment/placement system, develop a new student success course, develop a faculty academic advising system, develop online tutoring services, implement THEA/Compass orientation sessions, and develop math, reading, ESL, and writing accelerated/hybrid courses and supplemental instruction in these areas.

- Strengthening Outreach Services at the Cogdell Learning Center. Obtaining a higher education is the greatest asset anyone can have. The outreach services provided by MC's Cogdell Learning Center, located at 201 W. Florida, will be expanded. This initiative will significantly increase the institutional outreach performed in south Midland. There are two intended outcomes: 1) enrollment at Cogdell will increase by 66 percent (at least 300 students) over the five-year project; and 2) the percentage of new Hispanic students at MC who enter via Cogdell services will increase from 8 to 16 percent.

This initiative will provide for construction of a four-classroom building directly west of the Cogdell Learning Center. It also will provide for the development of a Bill Pace Cogdell Bridge Academy course, a career assessment/advising system and comprehensive financial aid assistance to Cogdell students.
