New Players Festival

ODESSA -- "New Plays and New Players" will take center stage at The Globe Theatre, 2308 Shakespeare Road, for two weekends in early June. One ticket will get an audience member into all five performances, each featuring different new work.

For this event, the Globe is seeking new short plays by local playwrights to be read over the five evenings. Please contact The Globe Theatre, 580-3177, for more information about submitting a short play.

The Globe Theatre will kick off the play reading series with Robert Hollmann's new musical "Oh Susannah," based on his children's book about the life of Susannah Dickinson, a survivor of the Alamo.

"Input from audiences at this stage of development will enable us to create a play that is entertaining to adults and children alike as we tell the story of one of the heroes of Texas history and examine the battle of the Alamo from a woman's point of view," said Cynthia White, manager director.

Friday night, June 6, will also feature a guest performance by the Permian Playhouse Kaleidoscope Company in "I Never Saw Another Butterfly," which the troupe plans to perform at the Texas Nonprofit Youth Conference in Denton.

"Vesta" by Brian Harnetiaux will also be given a staged reading.

"VESTA is a compassionate and poignant play about an elderly woman facing end of life issues,' White said. "The play received its professional theater premiere this winter in Seattle. The Globe hopes to work with local health care and church organizations to use this play to facilitate discussions within the community on this important topic."

All readings will be followed by brief discussions when the audience is invited to ask questions and respond to the new works.

In other news at the Globe, the theater has announced the availability of scholarships for its week long Camp Shakespeare for 13-18 year olds interested in acting and other areas of theater production. The students will rehearse weekdays June 9-13 and then perform their production of "The Comedy of Errors" at 2:30 p.m. June 14 and 15. Call the Globe for more information or go to http://www.globesw.org.
