MC golfers deserving of high praise

When you talk about excellence in athletics, you almost have to start with the Midland College golf team, and that was certainly the case this past week.

The MC golf team won the program's fourth national championship last week in Huntsville, Ala., with a four-day team score of 1,189, which was eight strokes better than Scottsdale (Ariz.) Community College at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Hampton Cove course.

The Chaparrals always seem to be in the thick of the national title race and rarely miss an opportunity to play in the national tournament. It's very tough to win any type of national title, but the Chap golfers have now brought home four national banners to display in Chaparral Center.

But even with that remarkable record, the Chaps have long been considered a national power in golf under golf coach Delnor Poss. MC has been ranked near or in the Top 5 year in and year out for nearly three decades. It is certainly a run to be proud of and we hope it isn't over with this most recent national title.

It's hard for the Chaps to find new ways of topping previous national championships, but they managed to find a new twist to add to this year's title. The Chaps' national title was made sweeter by David Thomas winning the national tournament medalist championship. Thomas fired a four-round 290 for the tournament, finishing four strokes ahead of a trio of players that tied for second place.

Thomas became the first Chaparral to win an individual medalist title at the national tournament. That was an added plum to a well deserved national title. In addition, Patrick Solberg, who ended up tied for eighth place in the individual race with a 297, also earned first-team All-American honors as did Thomas.

National titles, however, have to be won as a team. Others performing in the national tournament were Tommy Sikes, Henrich Frylinck and Daniel Shevill. We offer our congratulations to each of these fine representatives of MC and our community.

Coach Poss has served MC well over the years. He has also served as head basketball coach and athletic director over the years, but his golf program has earned him NJCAA Hall of Fame recognition. It is evident that the golf program is still at the top of its game.

Golf may not receive as much recognition as many of the other team sports, but it takes no less dedication and effort to become successful and the Midland College team proves that over and over.

" this months water bills gives information as to who to call when you see water wasted.
example, water running down the curbs for blocks from sprinklers.
i have called the city 3 different times on one location that has water running from powell to nearly andrews highway on illinois. either midland is getting really rich from the fines they are imposing on this address or midland is not doing anything about the reports of the water being wasted.
if you don't see a change it makes you think the city is really not doing anything about the reports of wasted water.

was it just all talk and no action in his speech? "

" I do not want to see anything named after the shrub either.
That yankee shrub had no problem sending our boys and girls off to war.
He had no problem with the news showing happy reunions when a soldier returned to his family.
BUT THIS LITTLE SHRUB WOULD NOT ALLOW THE PUBLIC TO SEE THE BRAVE SOLDIERS THAT LAID THEIR LIVES DOWN FOR AMERICA AND FOR A COUNTRY ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE GLOBE,.

We all owed those brave soldiers that one last honor of seeing them come home to Dover Airforce Base. We owed them the respect of quietly observing their returns in a casket. If it were only over the evening news.

But the little shrub refused them that last honor from the public.

I do not want to see anything named after a yankee shrub. "
