Tail of two cities: Mystery of 'Gilligan' stranded on island unfolds
by Shanna Sissom
Midland Reporter-Telegram
You may recall the story of a Del Rio family finding the pup stranded on the island while they were out in their boat fishing over the Fourth of July weekend. The dog was microchipped here five years ago, but there were no current phone numbers or an address for the owner who registered him in Midland County.
So how did a Midland dog find its way to that island after apparently swimming ashore?
As it turns out, the best guess is the transplanted canine left home near the lake and started swimming away from fireworks, of which he is said to be terrified.
The Gambrel family in Del Rio, bless their hearts, traced the dog's origins to Midland and ran newspaper ads here and there, doing everything they could to find Gilligan's home. Despite efforts to make him comfortable over the course of several days, they said the dog seemed homesick and even made several attempts to escape sanctuary.
He also was scared of the family cat, and they feared the feline mistreated him when they weren't home.
Since his island rescue gained media attention, first from this newspaper, also from CBS-7, the Del Rio paper and radio stations, widespread interest evolved.
Becky Gambrel's phone started ringing with kind people, many of them Midlanders, wanting to adopt Gilligan. An elderly woman grieving the recent loss or her toy poodle was hoping to get the dog. One man wanted to send money.
My inbox became flooded and people from as far away as New York City wanted to know more about Gilligan.
Did you know there's an organization dedicated to the sole purpose of rescuing beagles? Trust me, they were onboard, too.
But somewhere along the way, two owners emerged.
The beagle and his family of the past five years now have been reunited. I'm told his tail wagged eagerly when their car pulled up in front of the Gambrel house, and the dog jumped right into the car. Gilligan had escaped from a bedroom the night of the fireworks, we learned, and lives with a 10-year-old boy and his family. The dog is thought to have retreated to water and started swimming a far distance to flee firecrackers on land.
But this reunion has become a source of contention with the young Midland-area man who first adopted him before the wandering dog he named 'Torque' disappeared from a Del Rio relative's backyard so long ago.
We'll leave any dog custody battle to the proper authorities, but at least the four-legged castaway has been claimed.
For now, life is getting back to normal for the Gambrels and my inbox is a little more manageable.

I'm tired of politicians with no backbone. People who don't stand for anything, but are only a mouth piece for the latest AP polling. This years Presidential nominees are an embarrassment to us and I hope not an indicator of our nation as a whole.
Anyways, carry on. "

I was really miffed when Red Lobster closed several years back, and at that point in time, there was no place else like it.
Hoo Ray for Furr's Cafeteria and their great food!

Some people enjoy wearing the cloak of anonymity the internet can provide for them. They feel free to say anything without fear of reprisal. They think nothing of posting something they would never say to someone they held in high regard. Many things can be said and much pain can be inflicted with a few key strokes.
I enjoy hearing opposite views and stating my own. I have a very hard time with small minded people who apparently forget common courtesies. State your case, but do it in a way that respects sensitive issues and the victims and families that are on both sides of some very volatile issues.
Some seem to forget that these sites, and others like it, are not our personal sandboxes. They exist due to the largess of individuals and companies that provide the space and the software for all of us to discuss and share opinions, views, opinions and ideas. I cant help but wonder how long these open and anonymous comment sections will be allowed to continue if they are continually abused and treated as if they are rights and not privileges granted, in this case, by the Reporter Telegram.
