Lawn concerts

The free annual Summer Sunday Lawn concert at the Museum of the Southwest, 1705 W. Missouri Ave., continues today with David Newbould, July 20, sponsored by Lone Star Signs and Lite Rock 98 KODM.

The schedule also features Greg Witt w JazzBird, July 27, sponsored by Brooks Financial and Lite Rock 98 KODM; Smythe and amp; Taylor, Aug. 3, sponsored by The Bosworth Company and 1070 KWEL; and The Shades, Aug. 10, sponsored by Midland Pediatrics Associates and 97 Gold.

The performances run from 7:45 to 8:45 p.m. and are not held in the event of rain. The series is free and designed for the family. Bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on. Many bring their dinner or snacks.


The series is co-sponsored by the Reporter-Telegram and CBS7.

ArtHaus

ODESSA -- The Ellen No and euml;l Art Museum, 4909 E. University, has a free solution for children and their parents who are looking for something to do together -- ArtHaus.

In ArtHaus, children can read colorful art-related books, play computer games such as virtual jigsaw puzzles, watch an art-related DVD, play with finger puppets or blocks or do an art activity relating to current Museum exhibits, all in a safe, enclosed, air conditioned area. There's even a board designed for budding artists who are visually challenged -- helping them sense what they're drawing through touch. The Museum will be adding additional books and computer upgrades during the summer.

ArtHaus is open during regular museum hours --10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday. At least one parent or guardian must accompany children to ArtHaus. No admission fees are charged for ArtHaus or the Museum, but donations are accepted.

Junior League of Odessa is a current sponsor of ArtHaus.

The Ellen No and euml;l Art Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free. Call (432) 550-9696. ext. 10 for more information.

Outdoor concerts

ODESSA -- The free Hot Summer Nights concert series runs from 8 to 10 p.m. Fridays through Aug. 1 at Noel Heritage Plaza Park.


The series features Jazz Cafe, Friday, July 25, contemporary jazz; and Tin Roof Tango, Aug. 1, acoustic fusion.

In the event of rain, the performance will take place at Ector Theatre, 500 N. Texas. Ice chests are permitted. No alcoholic beverages are allowed.

SAN ANGELO -- The Angelo Civic Theatre is presenting the musical "Grease" through Aug. 2.

Upcoming in Midland-Odessa

Concert

ODESSA -- On Aug. 16 -- the date of Elvis's death in 1977 -- "Remember the King" will be presented at Deaderick Auditorium, Odessa College campus. Curtain is at 8 p.m.

The first act will consist of Elvis gospel music presented by Gene Collins' 24 person gospel chorus with Dee Carter as Elvis singing with the group.

"It ought to be a 'spine-tingling and quot; event,'" Carter said. "We will present all of Elvis' gold gospel records and some of the gospel songs that, thought not going 'gold,' are well-loved by Elvis fans everywhere.

"Our band is without peer in this area: Dan Ferguson on keyboard, Ric Vickery on lead guitar, Lynn Holdridge on percussion and Joe Orona on bass. The brass section will be the first trumpet player and the first trombone player from the Midland-Odessa Symphony. Lynn and Dan are regulars with the 'Shades.'

A drawing for special memorabilia will be held during intermission.

Tickets, priced at $20, are on sale at 1404 W. Wall, Adcock's Ideal Cleaners or at KWEL, and in Odessa, at the Briar Patch, 1215 E. 8th St. The concert is a fund raiser for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. No reserved seating except for Cystic Fibrosis patients and their parents and sponsors.

Upcoming in Texas/New Mexico

Chamber Music Festival

RUIDOSO, N.M. -- The fourth annual Chamber Music Festival here is set for Aug. 1, 2 and 3.

Performing this summer are Russian pianist Alexander Kobrin, the Miro Quartet and the Amelia Piano Trio. Tickets are $60 to $75 for the series, depending on seating section.

The Miro Quartet was founded in 1995 at the Oberlin Conservatory. They enjoyed immediate and continuing success, winning first prize at the 50th annual Coleman Chamber Music Competition and taking both the first and grand prizes at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition.

The Amelia Piano Trio (possibly the only chamber music group in the world named for a guinea pig) was formed in 1999 and has already established a glowing international reputation The Trio played all six Beethoven piano concertos in a festival in New Orleans last December. In 2006, they repeated the performance live on WFMT, the Chicago public radio station.

The Festival has added a new performance this year. In addition to their evening concert, the Amelia Piano Trio will perform "A Hair Affair," a humorous presentation about the lives, personalities and music of famous classical musicians. Cellist Jason Duckles is also a talented cartoonist whose sketches and upbeat personality will add to this performance. Tickets for "A Hair Affair" are $10 for adults and $5 for children.

The festival begins with a free concert talk July 30 at noon on the grounds of the Ruidoso Public Library. Bring your lunch and learn about the performers and the music that will be played in the upcoming concerts.

The festive Fabulous Festival Fling is July 31 at 7 p.m. The fund-raising event is at the Swiss Chalet, 1451 Mechem, and is catered by Hennington's Grille and amp; Tavern. Wines created especially for the Chamber Music Festival by Willmon Vineyards will be featured. Tickets for the party are $25.

All performances are held in the Performing Arts Hall, next to Ruidoso High School, 125 Warrior Dr. An art exhibit in the theater lobby during the Festival highlights some of Lincoln County's finest artists. Receptions after each performance, catered by local restaurants, are a way to meet the performers and socialize with fellow concert-goers.

Nickelodeon

LUBBOCK -- Nickelodeon and Broadway Across America announce a brand-new, national touring production of The Backyardigans Live! Tale of the Mighty Knights. The production will be making a stop at City Bank Auditorium in Lubbock on Thursday, Aug. 14.

The Backyardigans Live! Tale of the Mighty Knights, based on the primetime Nickelodeon special that premiered Jan. 14, 2008, follows Nickelodeon's backyard friends, Uniqua and Tyrone, as they become Knights and embark on a quest to protect King Pablo's unpredictable egg. Along the way, Grabbing Goblin Austin and Flighty Fairy Tasha join the medieval mayhem as the runaway egg hatches feet and makes an unexpected dash all the way up to Dragon Mountain. The Backyardigans will need the audience's help to face a mighty dragon and return the egg to the king. The Backyardigans Live! will have the entire family singing, dancing and laughing along to songs of ourage, friendship and the power of imagination.

The Backyardigans Live! includes some of the same creative team that produces The Backyardigans for Nick Jr. television, including Emmy-nominated writer, Adam Peltzman, and choreographer, Beth Bogush. Drama Desk Award-nominated director, Lou Jacob, has also signed on to direct the production.

Since its debut on Nickelodeon's preschool weekday lineup, The Backyardigans has become the number-two-rated preschool show on all of commercial TV among the target audience of preschoolers.

Nickelodeon and Broadway Across America's most recent project, Go, Diego, Go Live! The Great Jaguar Rescue has sold more than 600,000 tickets and has set the bar for touring family shows as the Top Grossing Touring Family Show at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Grants

Time to apply

The Arts Assembly of Midland is accepting grant applications from local 501 (c) (3) non-profit organizations until noon Aug. 15.

Financial assistance is available for Midland arts projects, programs, exhibits, and performances. Applications and guidelines may be obtained by calling 687-1149.

The subgrants program will be discussed at the quarterly arts meeting held on Monday July 28, noon, at the Palette Club, 907 W. Wadley. All those interested in the application process are welcome to bring a brown bag lunch.
