Removal of tattoos gains in popularity
by Midland Reporter-Telegram
We're certainly not surprised that Texas Tech University Health Sciences has opened an affordable tattoo removal clinic in Odessa. The "regret" syndrome often runs deeper than the ink after the passage of time.
Tattoos certainly are gaining in popularity among both men and women, but what was "cool" or meaningful when the tattoo was applied often produces regret later in life. Tattoos are not easy to erase, but it can be done. The Tangelwood Clinic at 4214 Tanglewood Lane in Odessa might be able to help. The clinic is open every Friday for tattoo removal. Also, costs are one-quarter to one-third less than laser treatment provided by a dermatologist or plastic surgeon.
Evidently, there was a screaming need for the tattoo removal program. When U.S. District Judge Rob Junell announced the clinic project in June, phones at the main Tech campus in Odessa and those of the U.S. Probation Office were "ringing off the hook."
The clinic had not planned an opening until the end of September, but public demand prompted a July 11 start. The popularity of this program is a signal as to how regret can come after getting a tattoo.
When people get tattoos, they don't count on the social or employment implications that may follow. Gang related tattoos can bring on bitterness and disappointment in later years.
Those at the clinic say that many of those seeking tattoo removals are professional women who are trying to become teachers or lawyers. Tattoos that were the rage among friends might not work so well in the professional arena.
Of course, we aren't trying to tell people how to live their lives. The business of tattooing the body is certainly a personal matter that has to be a personal decision. However, we do think it is wise to warn those who are thinking of getting a tattoo to take some time and consider all the implications that could arise down the road.
While tattoos are perfectly legal, one must be careful in the choices they make. Tattoos are often symbols for someone trying to send messages. The message you feel strong about today may not be the same in 20 years, but the tattoo still will be there.
To tattoo or not to tattoo is your choice, but at least make a wise decision that you can live with the rest of your life or you too might face regret down the road of life. And while tattoos can be removed, it isn't an easy process.
