As a result of people nationwide flocking to Midland for the Amateur Softball Association tournament, the local economy will benefit $2.6 million, according to statistics released Wednesday by the Chamber of Commerce's Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The ASA 14 and Under Nationals has attracted 86 teams from about 18 states to the Freddie Ezell Softball Complex at Ulmer Park this week.

The week-long event is generating an estimated $44,000 in hotel and motel taxes for Midland, said Nancy Swallow, the sports director for the Chamber of Commerce Convention and Visitors Bureau.

According to her department's calculations, 4,876 room nights have been generated with 1,900 attendees staying in Midland hotels -- some checking in as early as Monday.

Rooms have been going at an average of $101, Swallow said.

Another 929 attendees are day visitors, meaning they stay in Odessa hotels and travel into Midland each day for the tournament, Swallow said.

Midland secured the assocation's 29th annual ASA 14 and Under Nationals two years ago at the association's national meeting in Colorado.

"Approximately 350 voting members chose Midland, which was up against 12 other cities," Swallow said.

The City Council then secured $35,000 of hotel and motel tax money toward the bid. The Midland United Girls Softball Associaton also contributed $10,000 -- bringing the bid total to $45,000, she added.

"With the success of this event, we do intend to bid for it again," Swallow said.
