Music, carnival rides, food, ranch rodeo events, exhibits and cooking competitions add up to the Permian Basin Fair and Exposition opening today at Odessa's Ector County Coliseum.
"Come early and stay late because we have entertainment going from the time the gates open until the time the gates close," said Carla J. Clark, president of the all-volunteer 52-member board that makes the event possible.
"And that first weekend we've got jousting. You really don't want to miss that. A lot of people have never been to a ranch rodeo where they actively have working ranch hands. And we have dog shows and youth rodeos going on in the back and a lot of people don't get back to the arenas because they don't realize how much goes on back there besides the stock shows."
This year the event features an antique car show in Building A, Clark said, adding that the vendors have been moved back to the floor of the coliseum because there is more room.
"The restaurant association is going to do some culinary and mixology events on the floor of the coliseum, and we have several cooking competitions that are going to be happening through the week," Clark said. "The demo derbies are going on both Saturday nights. And BMX creative sports is coming in, and they do the stunts on the bicycles and on their ramps."
Application forms for different events can be found on the PBFE Web site at www.permianbasinfair.com. The online site also includes a list of daily activities and performing groups.
Hours are 5 p.m. to midnight today and Sept. 12, 10 a.m. to midnight Saturday and Sept. 13, noon to 10 p.m. Sept. 7, 5 to 10 p.m. Sept. 8-11. The fair runs daily through Sept. 13.
"The fair is run by a full volunteer board that spends approximately 11 and one half months preparing for our annual event," Clark said. "We look forward to seeing you ... and trust it will be a fun-filled time for you, your family and friends."
