Former Dallas Cowboys tight end Jay Novacek was in the Permian Basin on Friday promoting the Alltel Wireless "Yards 4 Youth Football" program in West Texas.

This is the second year of the program, and last year, it raised $22,000 for youth football programs in Abilene, Midland and Odessa. This year, "Yards 4 Youth Football" has expanded to a 10-week schedule, with Alltel donating $1 for every yard gained by each participating team (maximum of $200 per team, per week).

Novacek said he likes promoting this program, especially in West Texas, because he knows what football means in this region of the country.

"Youth football is so big here in Texas, and they need to have things done right and run right," he said. "And, if there's equipment that this money can help out with, and if there's things to help the kids ... then it's a huge benefit."

Youth football programs in Midland, Odessa, Lubbock, Abilene and San Angelo will benefit from Alltel donations this year.

While Novacek was visiting the Permian Basin to promote the "Yards 4 Youth Program," he also talked a little bit about his former team. He said that the Cowboys always have big expectations, but the team they have this year has unlimited potential.

"They have a team that's good enough to do whatever they want," Novacek said. "They sure enough should be in the playoffs, and in the playoffs, they'll have a good a chance as anybody to win the Super Bowl. It's just a matter of playing well as a team at the right time."

The Cowboys have another tight end currently on their roster that embodies some of the same qualities that Novacek possessed during his playing days. But the former Cowboys star said there are not as many similarities as people might think between he and Jason Witten.

"The productivity of it is what people see," Novacek said. "He's very big, very strong, runs good routes, catches the ball great. Mentally he understands that he has to keep improving because everyone else is trying to stop him. You put all that together, and that's what it takes to be a good player in the NFL, and that's what he has."
