Geologists, geophysicists and other interested parties will converge on Midland Center beginning Wednesday, Sept. 10 for the 20th West Texas Geological Society Fall Symposium.

Though not all the presentations -- which will continue Thursday and conclude at noon Friday, Sept. 12 -- concern the Permian Basin, general chairman Rick Doehne said many offer ideas that could be used in the Permian Basin in keeping with the theme, "The Permian Basin: Geological Models to the World."

"There's a little something for everyone," he said. "I'm pleased with what we have to offer."

Registration opens at 7:30 a.m. and Bob Gunn, chairman of Gunn Oil Company in Wichita Falls and past president of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists will offer the keynote address at 9 a.m. His presentation is expected to touch on the theme "I'm Proud to be an Oil Man!" On Thursday, Sept. 11, the meeting will move to the Petroleum Club for the ethics luncheon, which will be addressed by Lynn Hughes, United States District Judge, Southern District in Houston.

Doehne noted some of the technical sessions will focus on shale plays, including plays located in the Permian Basin. "We haven't given up on shale here," he said. "It's still a hot topic."

Shale-related presentations will include "real technical" talks on integrating log, DH testing and core data to optimize gas shale stimulation and maximizing coring operation efforts for shale gas exploration. There is also, Doehne said, a presentation by the Bureau of Economic Geology on fractures in the Barnett Shale of the Delaware Basin and comparing them to the Barnett Shale in the Fort Worth Basin.

There is also what he called a "mini-series" on the Spraberry-Wolfcamp or "Wolfberry" play and a look at the potential of the Raton and Las Vegas basins in northern New Mexico and an analysis of the Basal Abo/Wolfcamp horizontal resource play in southeastern New Mexico.

"There will be a presentation on the Wink sinks," said Doehne. "And a graduate student will be giving a talk on the carbonate cements in the Cherry Canyon formation in Culberson and Reeves counties."

Yet another presentation will be Yates gas as an unconventional resource play and a guide for explorations on the formation of high helium gases. Another topic will liken 3-D seismic waves to brain waves and a final topic will discuss finding and using air photos, satellite data and lease and topographic maps to develop prospects and operate efficiently in the Permian Basin.

"We're taking it from a broad view to an almost basin-wide view -- the shale presentations are that way -- down to smaller areas -- to field level, old and new, then to the technical topics," Doehne said. "I think it's a good line-up."

Poster sessions will be held in conjunction with the technical sessions during the symposium. Further information is available by calling 683-1573 or by e-mail at wtgs@wtgs.com. Attendance is limited to 250.
