With Wall Street's sub-prime mortgages crisis still swooping Washington like a screaming Bald Eagle, President George W. Bush on Tuesday postponed his Thursday fundraiser in Midland but hopes to have it Saturday or early next week, a spokesman for U.S. Rep. Mike Conaway said Tuesday.
"It's always a good sign when they say 'postponed,' not 'canceled,'" the spokesman said. "We are working with the White House and trying to find a way. The president definitely wants to come and has talked to Mike a few times about looking forward to it.
"There are greater things to worry about now, so he's staying in D.C."
Slated to host the fundraiser for targeted U.S. House of Representatives races around the country with his wife Suzanne, Conaway was back in the Permian Basin Tuesday but plans to return to Washington when Congress convenes at noon Thursday to seek a resolution of the crisis.
The House voted 228-205 Monday to reject the $700 billion "bailout" sponsored by U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and House leaders of both parties.
White House spokesman Blair Jones told the Reporter-Telegram on Tuesday that Bush "will remain in Washington on Thursday and continue to work with his economic advisors and members of Congress on a financial rescue package.
"We hope to reschedule the event in Midland and are looking for opportunities to do so," Jones said. "The president always looks forward to visiting in his home state of Texas and is looking for opportunities to reschedule the event."
Conaway's spokesman said a planning group was told here late Monday afternoon that the reception and barbecue in Bush's hometown might be delayed. Then on Tuesday morning, the White House said Bush's travel plans had been canceled, he said.
The spokesman said Bush's reunion with many of his old Basin friends from the 1970s and '80s could happen at the Conaways' northwest Midland home Saturday or early next week, possibly Monday, even if Congress does not pass a bill by then to thaw frozen credit sources and stem the stock market slide set off by representatives' rejection of the bailout.
"Whether there's a deal or not, there has to be some resolution and right now that is up in the air," he said. "We're looking to move the fundraiser forward a few days."

" Great Baboosky, Pres. George W. Bush, Rep. Mike Conaway, CRAIG ANDERSON AUDIENCE, CARMEN, GORDON LIDDY AND ECONOMIST WILLIAMS OF COAST TO COAST RADIO SHOW:
Experimental & Pursuant to the 5th amendment PROHIBITING GOVERNMENT FROM USING PRIVATE PROPERTY WITHOUT JUST COMPENSATION - SUCH AS EURASIAN'S SOLUTIONS TO GOVERNMENT PROBLEMS
In the second term of Pres. Clinton, the IRS and other leaders wanted a way to COLLECT TAXES WITHOUT AN IRS COLLECTOR. DID PRESIDENT FORD SPEAK AND ANSWER "GIVE EVERYBODY A CERTAIN AMOUNT, SAY 300 DOLLARS" ? NO HE DID NOT!!!! NEITHER DID THE PROPOSER WHO TOLD HIM TO GIVE REBATES TO PEOPLE. WHAT THIS MEANS IS THAT PRES. FORD AND HIS PROPOSER DID NOT KNOW HOW TO COLLECT TAXES WITHOUT A COLLECTOR!!!
SO WHO TOLD THE NATION THAT A GOOD ANSWER TO THE IRS' AND THE NATION'S QUEST FOR "HOW TO COLLECT TAXES WITHOUT USING A COLLECTOR" IS SIMPLY TO PRINT A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF MONEY THEN DISTRIBUTE SUCH PREFERABLY EQUALLY EQUALLY EQUALLY TO PREFERABLY EVERYBODY!!!!
YES BABOOSKY, PRES BUSH, REP. CONAWAY, - SUCH NEW MONEY DISTRIBUTED TO PEOPLE WILL HAVE PURCHASING POWER, EURASIAN SAID WHEN PRES. BUSH THE YOUNGER WAS ONLY A GOVERNOR OF TEXAS. WHERE WOULD SUCH NEW MONEY GET ITS PURCHASING POWER??? FROM INFLATION BABOOSKY!!!!
WITH INFLATION, EACH DOLLAR WILL DECREASE IN VALUE. AND IN THIS PROCESS, IT IS BECAUSE PART OF THE OLD DOLLAR'S PURCHASING POWER WILL GO TO THESE NEWLY PRINTED ADDITIONAL DOLLARS PUT INTO CIRCULATION!!!!
BABOOSKY, AMERICAN PEOPLE, PRES/ BUSH THE YOUNGER, CONGRESSMAN CONAWAY, GORDON LIDDY, DO YOU ALL NOW UNDERSTAND HOW EURASIAN ANSWERED THAT QUESTION ON HOW TO COLLECT TAXES WITHOUT HAVING TO USE IRS COLLECTORS???? GUESS WHAT??? NOBODY WAS ABLE TO ANSWER THAT QUESTION, NOT PRES. FORD, NOT THE PERSON WHO TOLD PRES. FORD TO GIVE REBATES TO PEOPLE, NOT PRES. BUSH THE YOUNGER, NOT ALAN GREENSPAN, NOT ANYBODY ELSE AT ALL, ===== BUT ONLY THE EURASIAN.. AND BECAUSE OF THAT, THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMMENT OWES EURASIAN JUST COMPENSATION AT LEAST FROM THE 5TH AMENDMENT, OR MORE. "

EXPERIMENTAL & PURSUANT TO THE 5TH AMENDMENT PROHIBITING GOVERNMENT FROM USING PRIVATE PROPERTY WITHOUT JUST COMPENSATION - SUCH AS EURASIAN's EXPERIMENTAL ON HOW TO COLLECT TAXES BY GOVERNMENT GIVING MONEY EQUALLY TO PEOPLE, for example the $300 which Pres. Bush gave away in 1981.
Remember the $300 Bush Rebate? Actually that was Eurasian's Experimental Government Money Giveaway Tax Collection Process & Eurasian's answer to the IRS on "How to Collect Taxes Without a Collector".!
That same process, Mr. President & Mr. Representative CAN BE USED AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO YOUR $700 BILLION DOLLAR BAILOUT. JUST GIVE THE MONEY EQUALLY TO MILLIONS OF EVERYBODY. THAT WILL STIMULATE THE ECONOMY AND FROM SUCH STIMULATED AND GROWING ECONOMY THOSE BORROWERS CAN EARN AND TO PAY THOSE MORTGAGES. the-eurasian@earthlink.net "
