Casa provides example for helping others

Casa de Amigos has started its "$2 million in 2 years" campaign to raise endowment funds for the organization, and Paula and Jim Henry helped get that campaign off to a great start with a $500,000 donation.

The Henrys long have been involved with Casa and have worked tirelessly to see that agency's programs were ever expanded and bettered. As a result, Casa has been a real benefit to Midland through the organization's program base and community leadership.

The ongoing success of Casa and other agencies like it serve as a reminder to all of us what is right with living in West Texas. West Texans are a conservative people, who think it is important to take care of their own. Few places in the country do it better than we do it here.

In short, the people-helping-people concept is more the norm here than in most places in our nation. We put into practice what many places only dream about. It's nice to live in a place that cares about its neighbors no matter what race, religion or job description.

But, as you well know, our nation is facing perilous economic times and that will make it much harder for non-profit organizations all across the country to gain the money they need to operate and to provide services to those in desperate need in desperate times.

It will be a struggle for charitable organizations of all types to make ends meet as the dollar squeeze puts a stranglehold on the pocketbooks of America.

That is why we were elated to see Casa get off to such a great start to its endowment effort. For one thing, it shows that Midland's charitable spirit still exists, even in a time of uncertainty. That is a show of confidence that is worthy of praise.

We hope the Casa fundraising effort goes on to be a resounding success, but we also hope our charitable spirit survives beyond Casa. We hope our giving attitude continues to define us as a caring people.

There may be rough times ahead, but we fully believe you really can't out-give the benefits we receive from the charitable works that take place daily in our community.

We think Midlanders will continue to be a caring people to the very limits of their capability. And we also know it is very possible those limits will be tested in these critical times.
