Big high school football action coming to town
by Midland Reporter-Telegram
High school football's second season is now underway and we would like to congratulate all the Permian Basin football teams that have earned state playoff status and wish them success while making this thrilling ride.
Midland County for sure is witnessing a historic start to the playoffs. All five schools in the county (Midland High, Midland Lee, Greenwood, Midland Christian and Trinity) are playing in Midland this weekend. This is a historic first and it should provide Midlanders with a lot of football action to be a part of this weekend.
Greenwood started the weekend Thursday night against Pecos at Grande Communications Stadium in a Class 3A bi-district bout. Tonight, Lee will host District 1-5A champion El Paso Montwood at 7:30 p.m. at Grande while Midland Christian has won the right to face Tyler T.K. Gorman in a first round TAPPS contest at newly refurbished Mustang Field also at 7:30 p.m.
Action continues 1 p.m. Saturday when the Midland High Bulldogs host El Paso Coronado at Grande in another Class 5A playoff game. Trinity ends the county football fair with a 2 p.m. TCAF contest at Coombes Field.
It's rare enough to have Midland's two public schools in the playoffs in the same year. MHS and Lee have been playoff bound in the same year only two times (2004 and 2006) prior to this season. They have never been at home on the same weekend while in the playoffs although both have played playoff games at Grande before. MHS is 1-0 at Grande in the playoffs while Lee is 1-1.
But the Permian Basin is in the midst of even a more perfect weekend. Not only are MHS and Lee playing at home, but so are Odessa Permian (vs. El Paso El Dorado, 7 p.m. today) and Odessa High (vs. El Paso Franklin, 1 p.m., Saturday). Both of those games are at Ratliff Stadium.
Permian Basin teams swept all four playoff positions from District 2-5A in the first year of the re-designated district.
So pick a team and join in on the fun. There are few sporting events in West Texas that can generate the excitement that comes from the state high school playoff battles of Texas. There is a raw passion that builds with each passing week and those teams that can survive from week to week will see that excitement build.
But for the Midland fans, it will be hard to beat what we will get on the first week of the playoff season with every team at home.
