BROWNWOOD — From the opening play of the game all the way until the final buzzer sounded, the Midland Christian football team which plowed its way through the 2008 season was nowhere to be found Friday night.
In what Mustang head coach Greg McClendon described as a “sad ending to a great year”, Midland Christian, which had an uncharacteristic five turnovers, fell to Trinity Christian-Cedar Hill 35-28 in heartbreaking fashion in a TAPPS Division II state semifinal at Gordon Wood Stadium in Brownwood.
“Our team gave us everything they had all year,” McClendon said. “They had character, everyday, every play, every game and I’m sad it’s over.”
Trinity Christian-Cedar Hill’s Jacobie King rushed for 153 yards on 18 carries, including the game-winning touchdown with 30 seconds left, while Dominique Rambo added 149 yards on 18 carries and four touchdowns.
“Their speed was just too much,” McClendon said. “We came back and did a good job defensively, but they are a good football team. That last drive they went down the field and won the game.”
The Mustangs had taken their first lead at 28-27 on a 13-play, 80-yard drive that ate up more than six minutes on the clock. With the momentum firmly entrenched on its side, Midland Christian (10-3) appeared to be in the driver’s seat and on its way to Temple next Saturday, but King and the Tigers (12-1) had the final say.
After two runs by Rambo moved the ball near midfield, King injured his ankle after it hit the helmet of one of his offensive lineman. After sitting out the next play, King willed himself back into the game against the good measure of his coach.
“He got his ankle taped and told me, ‘Coach, I’m going in,’ ” Cedar Hill head coach Mike Helmer said. “He went in and saved our season.”
Said King, “I’m thinking it’s my senior year, I don’t want to go out like this. So I had to suck it up.”
After returning, King hit Gregg Williamson for a first down on a 4th-and-16 play that kept the drive and the Tigers’ season alive. On the ensuing play, King connected with Dmikel Trotter for 42 yards down to the Midland Christian 7-yard line.
After Rambo was stuffed for no gain on first-and-goal, King galloped untouched into the end zone, setting off a wild celebration on the Tiger sideline.
“They were expecting option,” King said of the game-winning play. “They were calling out option when I walked up to the line and it just opened up inside for me.”
A fitting end for a team that has been through its fair share of adversity leading up to the game.
Already a huge underdog, Helmer got wind that TAPPS had already mailed the tickets for next week’s state championship game to Midland Christian and used it as extra motivation for his team.
“I told them TAPPS doesn’t even think you can win this game,” Helmer said. “Part of my pre-game speech was, ‘I want to walk across that field and take those tickets.’”
Helmer also said that “in order for our team to compete with Midland Christian, we had to go out there with some South Dallas swagger.”
“We may have seemed like thugs or jerks,” Helmer said. “It wasn’t any of that. We had to go out with that attitude if we wanted to win.”
Derick Perkins had 144 yards on 23 carries for Midland Christian in his final game in a Mustang uniform. Si Ratliff added 53 yards on 12 carries and two touchdowns while Bryant Burleson also had two touchdowns.
“I’m sad this season is over,” McClendon said. “It was a whole lot of fun.”
