Midland Mayor Wes Perry and former Commerce Secretary Don Evans announced the Jan. 20 visit during at a 2 p.m. press conference today at Centennial Plaza.
“This is where his race began. There on Wall Street when he ran for Congress. While we didn’t win, he later ran for governer and moved to Austin. And soon he found himself at 1600 Pennsylvania (Ave.),” Evans said. “After a race like that, the next place you want to go is home - and that holds true for George and Laura.”
Bush’s last presidential visit to Midland, where he grew up and met first lady Laura Bush, occurred in October. (Read Managing Editor Stewart Doreen's take on Bush's visit on his Newsroom Stew blog.)
Prior to that, the then-president-elect departed Texas from Midland for Washington days before his own inauguration in 2001.
The “welcome-home party” will take place at Centennial Park after Bush’s arrival.
People hoping to attend will need to obtain tickets, Perry said. Details about the process will be made available within the coming weeks, officials said.
More details to come.

This President has upheld his number 1 duty: protecting this country and her citizens from further attacks after 9/11. THAT is what history will record....along with the huge number of morons who thought they could predict historical accounts. Yeah, well tell that story to Harry Truman's contemporary critics. "

2. I have a life, thank you. A pretty good one I think. I just don't tend to handle ignorance or stupidity overly well.
3. I, too, am very proud of what "W" has done. His actions were not always popular, but he stuck to his convictions and did what he thought was right to protect our nation in the wake of events NOBODY could have prepared for. How many attacks have occurred in America since 9/11? That's right, none! He gave those who would seek to attack us a "lightning rod" and they went there to try to harm us rather than here. Some military lives from our all-volunteer force have been sacrificed to safeguard American civilians. As a man of military background, I understand and respect that. Many with no military bent and more liberal views will not agree, but I say better Baghdad than Boston. He was charged with protecting Americans first. He did that. Short of an isolationist policy I see no better option. Anybody can make decisions when they know they will be popular. The mark of a real leader and a real man is the ability to make hard decisions that will be unpopular and then standing by them despite poor polling numbers and throngs of less informed people making noise.
4. For those who are nay-sayers, ask yourself this: what exactly would you have done after 9/11 that would have served to try to bring justice to those responsible while keeping us safe from further attacks? Would you have been able to have simply continued on with the agenda you had planned prior to the attack? He couldn't and as a result his legacy was every bit as hijacked as the planes of 9/11. He knew it, and he stood by his decisions. That is a real man. "

3. 9/11 happened while "W" was in office, so he didn't do his job to protect us! There are so many reasons he is the worst president, including sending our ECONOMY to hell!
4. We should have sent the troops to do their job and bring them back HOME! Like your precious president is. "

Bush is an embarrassment who has trampled our constitution. Thank God his reign of terror is coming to an end. GWB is responsible for many more deaths than bin Laden. By the way, where is old Osama? Bush never did catch him after 7 years of trying and billions of dollars and thousands of lives.

Midland: While YOU were buying your new Escalade, a mother and her children were being forced to live inside of a station-wagon.
While YOU were renovating your house, Americans were being forced out of theirs.
Solely blaming the economic crisis on subprime loans and Wall St. is ludicrous. This man waited until his eighth year to raise minimum wage! While you will never understand the concept of trying to make ends meet on $5.15/hr, the rest of America will never understand why it took so long to raise it while the cost of living was sky-rocketing. It wasn't just the cost of gas that went up; rent went up 300%, basic food supplies such as milk, bread, and eggs went up, healthcare REALLY went up, etc. Making ends meet became impossible. Meanwhile, this city was getting richer and yes, even more ignorant (not to mention arrogant).
I do not want to make you hate this man, but I want you to understand why so many people do. Getting angry and name-calling anyone that doesnt venerate him as you do is not only disrespectful of the right to free speech, but it is a punch in the face to all the people that are suffering. The American Dream has never been so unattainable. "

GWB lied America in to a war Iraq, which has added a trillion dollars to the national debt, a war which we are still deeply stuck in and that will cost American taxpayers countless billions more.
GWBs administration illegally leaked the identity of a CIA agent to cover up his lies that lead to an illegal invasion of Iraq
GWBs administration was caught torturing prisoners at Abu Ghraib
Lets not forget all of the fake platitudes GWB promoted such as NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND, which he never funded
GWBs administration let Jeff Gannon, a gay prostitute specializing in gay military sex fantasies have over 200 unlimited access visits to the White House. Jeff Gannon was disguised as a legitimate press agent, even though Jeff Gannon had an active web site promoting his gay prostitution services the whole time he was visiting the White House. Jeff Gannon even asked GWB a question at a press conference. Dont believe it; you can pull pictures of that press conference up on the web. Gee I wonder what that was all about.
GWB declared in a national press conference speech that he didnt know where Bin Laden was and didnt
care.
GWB took office with a surplus and squandered it his first term
Etc
Etc

And this was all the first four years of his reign of terror. The second term was to depressive to even recap. "

BTW, I think your 99.5% of people never hearing about Midland is straight up WRONG! I know and talk to many people outside the state of TX and they DO know where Midland is.

The 4 Million people that will be in D.C. is indeed a big deal. This will be the largest audience ever. OK, part of the reason is because Obama is black. But you know that there are millions of people just counting down the days when Dubya is gone!!! Its will be a celebration indeed, just not the one that will take place in Midland. If a port-a- potty reference is the best you can come up with, well that's just sad. I have some conservative views, but I am not a right wing radical!! Baba Booey "
RAF wrote on Jan 15, 2009 10:07 PM:
Wow! That's a first!!! I've never been referred to as a right wing radical; especially due to a comment about port-a-potties. If you are one of the 4 million at the Obama celebration and you need to pee, the lack of port-a-potties could indeed be a major, and sad, problem.
Actually I wish Obama well in his Presidency because our safety will be in his hands and my hope is that he takes it as seriously as Bush did. I don't care about his race. As I said in an earlier post, I'm originally from CA where I grew up among many nationalities so his being the first black President is of course historic but my feeling is why not? At the same time, I LIKE President Bush. I believe he did what he thought was right for the country and he's a good person. I'm not forcing my views on others as some posters apparently are trying to do. It's almost as if they can't stand the thought that President Bush is going to have any kind of celebration once he leaves DC. I didn't know there was a rule that FORMER Presidents can't celebrate after they leave office. In fact thinking about it, when Clinton left the Bush inauguration, he & Hillary went to Andrews AFB and then proceeded to take forever before flying out of there. I remember at the time news commentators talking that that had never happened before and if they were trying to take attention away from the Bush family. At least President Bush is leaving DC to come to Midland to do the celebrating and I'm sure there will be very little coverage of it on the major networks or for that matter cable, so he won't be taking anything away from the Obama family. That shows the character of the man. "

We all can have our dividing opinions but there is no need to spread hatred towards this man. We should be thankful that he loved this country so much that he sacrificed 8 years of his life...and I am sure it was a very LONG 8 years in Washington. If many people have been disappointed in his performance....why haven't our colleges overflowed with road scholars to take his place? Who would really want to be President in this day and time? I haven't always liked every President we have had in the past but I have given each the respect that is due to our country and our leaders. No questions asked! However, it appears that in my nearly 9 years away from Midland, LITTLE in Midland has changed. The top story yesterday had NOTHING to do with George Bush other than the words "Good Riddance" and everything to do with ushering in a new America free of the corruption and above-the-law politics we have been forced to live under for the past 8 years. The Republican Party was not thrown out of Washington for reason just for grins. They were thrown out of Washington for nearly destroying our nation.
In addition, to seal his legacy, he spent the last days of his time in office, lauding his handling of Katrina, blaming 911, the Iraq war, Afghanistan and the collapse of the entire financial sector on anyone and everyone else but himself. Someone would do well to remind Mr. Bush (who appears to be on the verge of Alzheimers) that it was he and he alone who was ultimately responsible for EVERYTHING that happened on his watch. So while he is pointing his little green, crooked finger of blame around, he needs to turn that finger toward himself and realize that he single-handedly brought our entire country to it's knees. "
