CARTER TO BE IN FUTURES GAME: RockHound first baseman Chris Carter has been named to the United States roster for the All-Star Futures Game to be played July 12 in St. Louis.
“That’s a real honor,” Carter said. “I didn’t think I would be selected, and it’s a good feeling.”
Carter is batting .289 with 12 home runs and 52 RBI, both good for third in the Texas League. He also ranks third in all of minor league baseball with 60 runs scored. Carter, who was also ranked as the No. 6 prospect in the Oakland A’s organization by Baseball America, also leads the Texas League in walks (47), ranks second in extra base hits (35) and is tied for third in doubles (23).
He joins fellow A’s farmhand Jemile Weeks – a second baseman with Advanced-A Stockton of the California League -- in the all-star game.
The All-Star Futures Game features top minor league prospects from all 30 organizations. Tony DeFrancesco, the manager of the A’s Triple-A Sacramento affiliate and former RockHounds manager, will be on the U.S. coaching staff, managed by Ozzie Smith.
ROSTER MOVES: The RockHounds have optioned pitcher LHP Carlos Hernandez to Stockton, while adding RHP Michael Madsen to the roster.
Hernandez pitched well with the RockHounds, going 6-1 with a 4.50 ERA.
Madsen joins the ’Hounds after a short stint with the Ports and following extended spring training where he was recovering from arm surgery. Madsen has had stints with the RockHounds in 2006, ’07 and ’08.
BROWN BACK IN LINEUP: Center fielder Corey Brown was back in the lineup for the RockHounds on Saturday after missing the last month and a half with a knee injury. He went 1 for 4 with a double and Midland manager Darren Bush said he was pleased with Brown’s overall play.
TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The RockHounds host the Missions in the third game of a four-game series at 6 p.m. today at Citibank Ballpark.
Right-hander Travis Banwart (5-3, 4.30 ERA) is expected to start for Midland, while San Antonio will likely send righty Ernesto Frieri (7-3, 3.00) to the mound.
